Why Psychological Horror Hits Differently
The fundamental difference between psychological horror and other horror modes is the location of the threat: external versus internal. A slasher film's killer is definitively real; you can run from it, fight it, survive it. Psychological horror's threat is often ambiguous — is the ghost real or imagined? Is the protagonist's perception reliable? Is what we are watching a supernatural event or a mental breakdown? This ambiguity activates different cognitive processes than external threat horror and produces a more profound and lasting unease.
Roman Polanski's apartment trilogy — Repulsion (1965), Rosemary's Baby (1968), and The Tenant (1976) — are the foundational texts of psychological horror. Each film presents a protagonist whose perception of reality becomes increasingly unreliable; each film uses the confined domestic space as a crucible for psychological disintegration; and each film leaves the nature of the horror genuinely ambiguous in ways that multiply the unease long after the film ends.
