First Wave Gothic Rock
The first wave of gothic rock (roughly 1979-1985) produced the definitive canon of the genre. Beyond the most widely known acts, the first wave includes artists whose influence outstripped their commercial success: Cocteau Twins — Elizabeth Fraser's extraordinary voice and Robin Guthrie's shimmering guitar textures created ethereal wave, a subgenre of gothic post-punk more beautiful than dark but absolutely central to the aesthetic. Dead Can Dance — Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry's synthesis of European folk, Middle Eastern music, and gothic atmosphere is genuinely unlike anything else in popular music. This Mortal Coil — 4AD's collective project combining existing artists in atmospheric cover versions and original compositions. Clan of Xymox — Dutch darkwave that combined gothic guitar with early synthesisers and Ronny Moorings' distinctive vocal style.
Coldwave and Post-Punk Adjacents
The French coldwave scene — Joy Division's European counterpart — produced some of the most austere and genuinely unsettling music of the early 1980s. Asylum Party, Trisomie 21, and Ruth are the essential French coldwave acts; their influence on contemporary coldwave and post-punk revival acts including Molchat Doma, Fontaines D.C., and Preoccupations is direct and acknowledged. Italian darkwave — Opera Multi Steel, Diaframma, and Kirlian Camera — adds a Mediterranian romanticism to the northern European chill of the main stream.
Contemporary Darkwave
Contemporary darkwave has experienced a remarkable revival over the past decade. Chelsea Wolfe — American dark folk and doom metal with gothic sensibility; her albums Abyss and Birth of Violence are essential. Cold Cave — electronic darkwave from Wesley Eisold, influenced by early synthpop and gothic rock equally. Boy Harsher — cold, minimal electronic darkwave with a cinematic quality; their album Careful is a contemporary masterpiece of the form. ADULT. — Detroit electronic post-punk with genuine abrasive edge. Lebanon Hanover — Swiss-British duo whose minimal, cold sound recalls the most austere early darkwave.
