Gothic Horror Glossary — Terms, Tropes, and Traditions

The vocabulary of the dark — every term you need to navigate gothic horror culture.

Film and Genre Terms

Atmospheric horror — horror achieved through setting, sound, and suggestion rather than visible monsters or explicit violence. Body horror — horror centred on the vulnerability, mutability, or grotesque transformation of the human body. Cosmic horror — the horror of human insignificance in an incomprehensible universe. Death rock — the American punk-derived strain of gothic music. Diegetic — sounds or music that exist within the film's world (a character can hear them). Final girl — the female protagonist who survives a slasher film through intelligence and will. Giallo — Italian hybrid genre combining thriller, horror, and art film with elaborate murder set pieces. Grimdark — dark fantasy subgenre emphasising moral ambiguity, violence, and the absence of heroic certainty. Jump scare — a sudden shock designed to provoke startle response; the cheapest and most frequently criticised horror technique. Lore — the accumulated mythological detail of a specific horror universe or creature type.

Gothic Subculture Terms

Babybat — a new member of the gothic subculture, typically young and still developing their aesthetic. Batcave — the original 1980s London gothic club; also used to describe traditional first-wave gothic aesthetic. Darkwave — gothic electronic music with minimal or cold electronic production. Death rock — punk-influenced gothic music, particularly the American tradition. Elder goth — an older, established member of the subculture; a term of respect. EBM — Electronic Body Music; industrial electronic dance music adjacent to gothic subculture. Nu goth — contemporary gothic aesthetic influenced by social media and minimalist dark fashion. Pastel goth — gothic aesthetics combined with pastel colour palette; considered controversial by some traditionalists. Trad goth — traditional gothic aesthetic faithful to the first-wave template.
